It was a surprise to discover this mostly nocturnal mammal wandering along beside our country road in the late afternoon. It seemed, at first, to be oblivious to our presence as it foraged in the vegetation, using its pointy snout to root around for insects and other small creatures. Eventually, it became curious and wandered out to take a closer look at us before continuing on its way.

What a great encounter! I read on Wiki that their range is quickly expanding northward, possibly reaching southern New England… wow!
It really was Eliza. Though not a baby, I got the impression that it wasn’t very old. I was surprised how curious it seemed to be.
cute little guy!
right place,right time
True statement. It was a surprise encounter that I don’t think will happen again anytime soon.
probably not …….but that doesn’t mean other “right place, right time” opportunities won’t pop up with other critters.
Wonderful encounter. They seem so prehistoric.
Thanks, Timothy. I had thought that the armor would be really hard, but it seemed to move with it pretty well. It does look prehistoric.
Amazing!
It was fun to watch. 🙂
It really moved fast in that video. I have to say I’ve never seen a picture or a video of an armadillo, just a caricature or maybe a cartoon of them. I’d have thought at first glance it was a possum with that snout and long tail. That “armor” is interesting looking – what a great find for you Rebecca.
It did move along rather quickly. It was very focused on foraging. We see these quite often, but they are laying upside down in the middle of the road. It was a treat to have been able to observe one so closely.
I didn’t realize they were that common in Tennessee. It’s much nicer to see them live and on the move, that’s for sure.
Wonderful shot! 👍
That’s a cute little creature 😊😊
Thanks! I hope to see him again sometime. 🙂
Amazing! You so lucky…
It was a sweet find. 🙂
