Some of the beautiful dragonflies hanging around the lake.

Below are dragonfly nymphs on the underside of leaves near the water.

Curious dragonfly with
Wings of stained glass,
Oh, ancient bearer
Of secret dreams,
Your delicate beauty
Keeps wonder in my heart.
~Grace Edwards
Beautiful dragonflies.
Thanks, Timothy!
How nice you found so many beautiful dragonflies to go along with the equally beautiful poem (or was it the other way round?).
I took the dragonfly photos first. 🙂
So beautiful and delicate Rebecca and those gossamer wings – wow! I have not seen one dragonfly this Summer. They are usually at Lake Erie Metropark in the marshes. I hope they are not disappearing from our region due to climate change. Your poem perfectly sums up these tiny creatures.
Thanks, Linda. They seem to be plentiful enough here. We need them around to eat the mosquitoes which are more than plentiful this year.
Please send some our way Rebecca – even going out with long pants and long-sleeved shirts the mosquitoes find me on my neck or face.
I wish I could send you some. They do me the same way. I’m always very glad when mosquito season is over.
Yes, it takes the fun out of long walks plus worrying about ticks.
We seem to have plenty of those this year too.
It used to be you only had to do a goose poop check before leaving a park, not it’s a tick check and I’ve been known to bring mosquitoes into the house. Earlier this year a wasp hitched a ride on my hair!
The ticks are bad and the mosquitoes hover around my dogs and will come in with them if I don’t shoo them away. I can’t imagine finding a wasp in my hair! I’m sure I’d make quite a scene trying to get it out.
That would be a problem – you get mosquitoes in the house and its difficult to get rid of them. I would like to try a product called Raid Essentials Flying Insect Light Trap. I’ve seen it advertised a few times. It uses a light and is pet friendly. I don’t have pets but after the wasp incident, which was very scary and then it buzzed around the kitchen light fixture (a swag lamp) and I was afraid it might damage the fixture or catch on fire, I’ve worried I’ll bring in another wasp. I also had a moth come in on my hair. I wear it in a bun on top of my head to stay cool in the Summertime.
Dragonflies always have this evil look about them.
Imagine 275 million years ago and a 2 1/2 footer landed on your shoulder grinning at you with all those weird coloured eyeballs!
That would be a sight! Funny to think how long they have been have been around. I’m glad they aren’t quite so big anymore. 🙂
makes me wonder how big the mosquitoes were back then too? Something that big must have been eating BIG BUGS!
I hadn’t thought of that. 🙂
Well caught, Rebecca!
Thanks, Sue!
