Your comment led me on a learning lesson, interesting to note the difference in the terms. Basically, terrapins are comfortable on land as well as water, whereas true turtles are not. Thanks!
That is a lot of turtles at one time, especially on that one log. The sun must have been inviting them to sunbathe. They are glad to be above ground after a long Winter/Spring of hibernating. That turtle in the video was going pretty fast, then needed to stop, take a breath and rest its arms and legs a bit. 🙂 These turtles were fun to see Rebecca.
It’s hard to see in the video, but when the swimming turtle stopped and swam in a different direction, it quickly snatched a Mayfly out of the water. Then it continued on. I had to stop the video to see the Mayfly. It was so hot at the lake this last weekend that there were very few turtles on the logs. They were all keeping cool in the water.
I went back and watched the video and saw it snatch that Mayfly. Our Mayflies haven’t arrived yet. We’re having a heat wave here as well and it is causing some volatile weather tonight and tomorrow. I’m staying up a little later as this storm will be here after midnight.
I hope you haven’t had any really bad storms. We’ve gotten a lot of rain but they haven’t been severe.
We ended up not having the severe storm they predicted – whew! But, for a day and a half before, they were telling us to plan on severe weather. I think I lose a year or two off my life every time they make a prediction like that. We have five days of rain starting Saturday. We have had a very rainy Spring. Now I hear it will be a volatile hurricane season because of La Nina. The weather sure is worrisome Rebecca.
Yes, it is! Glad you didn’t have bad storms.
Thank you. Now we have one Sunday – I give up and am ready for Fall!
Seeing them sun themselves always serves as a reminder to slow down and enjoy the warmth of the day.
good to see so many! Do you have those snappers down there?
Yes, we do have snapping turtles. It’s best to stay away from the ones with a combative disposition. 🙂
Great experience and photos. The correct term for these would be Terapins (instead of Turtles – which live in the sea). 😊

You’re welcome Eliza.
Thanks, Michael.
So many! Nice to see a healthy colony… they must have ideal conditions. 🙂
They do seem to be thriving well around the lake.
Wonderful photos and video. Turtles are so interesting.
Thanks, Timothy. They’ve always been one of my favorite animals.
Turtles are Schildkröte in German, which literally means shield toad. I agree with the shield, but there is nothing toad about a turtle, IMHO.
Your photos are amazing. Turtles remind me of little tanks with their tough outer shell.
Thanks, Kathy. They do resemble tanks. 🙂 I’ve always liked turtles because of their steadiness and perseverance.

I couldn’t agree more. Thanks, Tanja. 🙂
Is that the only log in town?
Heehee. It did seem to be the most popular one on this day.
