These bright orange mushrooms, which were growing in clusters on a dead tree, immediately caught my attention as we drove down a winding, wooded road. Known as ‘Chicken of the Woods’, these edible, wild mushrooms fit in perfectly with all the other beautiful colors of autumn that we are seeing.
“As long as autumn lasts, I shall not have hands, canvas and colors enough to paint the beautiful things I see.” ~Vincent Van Gogh
I always enjoy taking a peaceful stroll in the woods. Even on gray days, when there is little else to see, a variety of interesting fungi can be spotted along the trail.
“Leave the beaten track occasionally and dive into the woods. You will be certain to find something you have never seen before.” ~Alexander Graham Bell
I enjoy walking the trails around Reelfoot National Wildlife Refuge and seeing the plant and animal life there. The woods are filled with the sound of the leaves rustling in the trees and birds calling back and forth to each other. My favorite forest sound is that of a loud barred owl resonating somewhere off in the distance.
“I took a walk in the woods and came out taller than the trees.” ~Henry David Thoreau
“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” ~Maya Angelou
