Taking charge

As I was taking photos of some turtles sunning on a log, a Great Blue Heron boldly landed on one end of the log and very assertively began marching herself right down the middle of it, scattering the turtles as she went.

Bearded Iris

The town of Dresden, in Northwest Tennessee, has an Iris Festival on the first weekend in May.  Part of the festival includes a flower show.  Below are some photos from this year’s flower show as well as some of my favorite iris from around the area.

A flower’s appeal is in its contradictions — so delicate in form yet strong in fragrance, so small in size yet big in beauty, so short in life yet long on effect.”  ~Terri Guillemets

End of the day

“You have to work hard at being happy, just like you have to work hard at being miserable.  I wake up every day expecting all to be good and right.  And if it’s not, I set my mind to making it so by the end of the day.”  ~Dolly Parton

Thoughts on vultures

Vultures are fascinating birds. On the ground, their wrinkled, featherless heads, grayish white legs and large, flat feet give them quite an awkward and uncomely appearance.

But in the air, they are absolutely stunning birds as they circle majestically over the farm fields, riding the thermals and looking for food. They soar and glide with elegance and style.  It’s hard to reconcile the fact that such an inelegant looking bird on the ground could look so graceful in the air.

“Imagination was given to man to compensate him for what he is not; a sense of humor to console him for what he is.”  ~Francis Bacon
