Flying among the tall grass along the levee were the red-winged blackbirds. Stopping to perch atop tall stems, the male, with his bright shoulder patches, would occasionally puff up his wings and belt out a loud song.
The female, the less showy of the two with her streaked brown feathers, was quieter and more likely to be overlooked.

Sassy indeed! He has to guard his territory from high upon that perch. 🙂
These are beautiful photos Rebecca. They are striking to look at and very vocal at the Park where I walk. It is a joy to hear them singing come Spring. I see very few females at this Park and like you said, they really blend in.

Very true! 🙂 I guess in the bird family, the red-winged blackbird is a perfect example of a bird that is both.
