Bacteria feeding on decaying vegetation at the bottom of the lake release methane bubbles. The bubbles rise to the surface and become trapped, one over the other, in the newly frozen ice.

Wow, such interesting shapes–that is very cool–and yes, cold!
You never know what you’re going to see in nature. 🙂
I had never seen frozen farts before. So beautiful and sculptural. Could there be some frozen fish flatulence among them, as well?
Nature continues to surprise. 🙂
Wow…never saw this before. 🙂
I have seen pictures, but this was the first time to see it in real time.
This is interesting. Methane made visible.
Thanks! It was a fun thing to see.
God’s beauty is everywhere, and you seem to find it through your lens. Thanks for sharing these interesting photos.
Yes, it is! Thanks, Kathy!
really cool
Fun to see. 🙂
poke the hole and lite it! I see people doing that all the time!
Very cool! 🙂
Interesting – I’ve never seen anything like this before. It looked like some type of modern art or clear suction cups.
This was a first for me also. I had seen photos before, but not the real thing.
Quite fascinating!
Very cool photos. I always thought these frozen bubbles represented air, but methane makes perfect sense.
