We spotted a Mississippi map turtle basking near the base of a cypress tree in the lake. These turtles inhabit waters along the Mississippi River and are identifiable by their shell patterns, which resemble the contoured lines of a map. They feature vivid yellow markings, yellow eyes, and a serrated ridge down the center of their shells. Their diet consists of aquatic plants, fish, and invertebrates.

“Picture me then idle, basking, plump, and happy, stretched on a cushioned deck, warmed with constant sunshine, rocked by breezes indolently soft.” ~Charlotte Bronte
He’s having a great time. Beautiful photos.
He did look comfortable out there in his little spot. Thanks, Timothy.
Great sighting, Rebecca. Never seen one of these before. Looks to be a very ancient species!
We usually see these turtles in the same location but weren’t sure what kind it was. It was fun to do research and identify it.
Isn’t it amazing how God protects these little creatures by giving them camouflage clothing?
My first impression of these turtles is that they look like they’re wearing pajamas. 🙂 Yes, so amazing.
big feet!!!!
Yes, indeed they have. 🙂
I’ve never seen one of these Mississippi Map Turtles before Rebecca, so it was nice to see yours up close and personal. It has got awfully big feet, so I guess it is easy to paddle around on the surface of the water and underwater too. Your quote is perfect for this turtle basking-in-the-sun post.
Thanks, Linda. I see them quite often but had never put a name to them. It was interesting to learn about them.
Yes, how interesting that their shell resembling a map!
