While driving the roads around the wildlife refuge, we are always on the lookout for woodland mammals which venture out into the open to forage and move about.Β

“It is remarkable how many creatures live wild and free though secret in the woods.” ~Henry David Thoreau
Those little woodland creatures are sure fun to watch.
Yes, they are. It’s always a joy to watch animals that are wild and free in their natural habitat.
Nice sightings, Rebecca. I’ve never counted how many wild neighbors I have seen here over the years, but it must be dozens of species. The first snowy tracks of the year confirm their presence, always a pleasant surprise.
How fun to see the footprints. You should keep a record of what you see. Occasionally we see mink crossing the road but they move quickly, so I’ve haven’t been able to get a photo, and there are some pretty good sized beaver lodges around but the beaver has alluded me so far. Hopefully some day. π
This was a good trip for you Rebecca. That bunny is beautiful. I’ve not seen any bunnies in a while. The deer is fascinated with you isn’t it? I’ve not seen a skunk in my excursions, nor a river otter, but I understand a river otter was discovered in the Detroit River for the first time in 100 years and there was much excitement about that sighting.
These photos were taken at different times over the past few months. It was fun spotting the rabbit. It was sitting frozen on a log beside the road hoping that we wouldn’t see it. There were two deer, including this one, back at the tree line that froze and watched us for a while. We drove past the skunk on a back road. I didn’t get a very good photo of him because I was a little nervous to pause near him for very long. The river otter ran across the road in front of us and dived into the ditch. I was glad to get his photo, as he was moving along pretty quickly. It is the first one that I ever recall seeing.
You were lucky to be at the right place and time to get the photos – I would be nervous around a skunk as well. Rabbits freeze, then just when you think you’ll take their picture, they bolt.
Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos of wildlife in nature.
Thanks, Mags. It’s always fun to see them.
Wonderful!
Thanks, Cindy.
What a wonderful quote from Thoreau that describes exactly what you have. Illustrated here with these delightful photos!
Thanks so much! π
