March Awakenings

Here are a few photos taken around the lake and wildlife refuge in March. It’s always exciting to witness the flowers blooming, the leaves turning green, and the little creatures stirring after their winter rest.

One of my favorite sightings was a mink that ran across the road in front of us and quickly vanished into the swampy woods, showing no inclination to stop for a photograph.

Just as the earth awakens and renews itself in spring, so too Christians celebrate the resurrection of our Savior, Jesus Christ, during this Easter season.

“Our Lord has written the promise of the resurrection, not in books alone, but in every leaf in spring-time.” ~Martin Luther

  1. The promise of new life comes with the spring awakening. Your photos always me . Keep up the great work. Happy Easter.

  2. What a nice collection of Spring beauties you have here Rebecca. All these delicate insects, pretty butterflies, dragonflies. We have a way to go in the Spring season before we see them, but turtles, eagles are likely already enjoying our warmish weather we had today, especially the turtles sunning on a log, thankful to be above ground! We have mink in Michigan but I’ve never been lucky enough to see and photograph one so close up. Thank you for the inspiration during Holy Week.

    • Thanks, Linda. We’ve seen minks along the wildlife road before, but they usually disappear before we get close. This one paused just long enough for some back shots before it scurried out of sight. The dragonflies were along a walking trail. I’m not sure why they were attracted to the plants. Maybe just catching some sun. They were all up and down the trail. I had never seen a Bee fly before. It caught my attention because of the way it was hovering instead of flying. They have cute little fuzzy bodies.

      • I follow a local Metropark hobby photographers site on Facebook and the photographers often show mink crossing their path (accidentally for sure as the mink are quite skittish) or I would not know what they look like. I wish that park was closer to me or I’d visit it. The dragonflies, butterflies and turtles … all enjoying the sun just like us humans after a long Winter, even in Tennessee. I saw a bee in motion in mid-air last year for the first time. They are usually in a blossom. It was exciting to see and take its picture. They do look fuzzy – even cute!

  3. You included a eagle as a little creature? Poor thing doesn’t know It’s been downgraded.

Minks are always hurrying here or hurrying there. They never want to stop and chat.

    Great shots Rebecca!

    • Hee, hee. It’s definitely not a little creature — just one that I saw around the lake in March. Actually, I believe a few of them hang around the lake year-round. I guess, unfortunately, that “wishing” doesn’t make the minks slow down. But I’ll keep hoping. Thanks, Wayne.
