With its rodent-like head, I’m thinking this is a muskrat. We sometimes see them in water-filled ditches near the Mississippi river and swimming in shallow parts of the lake. They are definitely cuties!
I’m thinking the plants are Spatterdock or Yellow water lilies. They flower from June to mid-August, so you won’t see any flowers in October. Yes, I believe that is a Great egret.

Reelfoot Lake has both beavers and muskrat, but I think that this is muskrat. It is fun to watch them swim around in the duckweed. 🙂
