Because of the hot and humid weather, one of our favorite walking times is around dusk, when the temperature is cooling down. One of the benefits of walking at this time is that it is an active time for deer, which prefer to feed during low-light hours. Occasionally, we spot one that has come out of the woods to forage on corn, soybeans, and in this case, sunflowers.
“The real world, in my opinion, exists in the countryside, where Nature goes about her quiet business and brings us greatest pleasure.” ~Fennel Hudson
Oh the beauty of those eyes, so innocently surrounded by darkness. What a joy to come upon them and be able to get such great photos.
What a perfect description, Kathy! It is amazing to see them out in nature.
As a gardener, I have a hard time liking deer, no matter how cute. I wish they’d stick to the woods! 😉
I really like the F. Hudson quote – I must agree!
I understand. My parents have had trouble this year with a rabbit and a squirrel that have wiped out the vegetables in their little garden. I guess since this isn’t my sunflower field, I don’t have a bone to pick with the deer. 🙂
How lucky for you that this deer liked sunflowers – I like the way he is staring so intensely at you.
Yes, she was watching every move we made. I’m surprised that she didn’t bolt off.
I was surprised when I saw the two fawns too – the one especially just stared at me, but didn’t bolt, and they were both content to just nibble leaves and pay me no mind. What a treat to enjoy them leisurely.
That is so awesome!
Usually when we see one, it runs off quickly. It is always fun when they stay around long enough for a picture or two. 🙂
They come up in my backyard often.. but they started getting really bold! They’d get so close to the house that the tv would spook them! I have a post about it if you’re interested.
