Shortly before dusk, a muskrat came swimming across the lake toward the boardwalk at the refuge. As it swam about in the shallow water, foraging on aquatic plants, it joined in a chorus of high-pitched squeals with a couple of other muskrats that were swimming nearby.

Like cute little wind-up toys!
They do have lots of energy!
They sure are animated and I was happy to see at the very end, that he/she took a longer swim. They kept going a short distance, then stopping. We have them in our Creek at the Park, but mostly I see the tail only and that is because they are going fast in the water.
I had never seen them play out in the open the way they did on this day. It was fun to see them interact with each other.
They were just as playful as a couple of puppies!
those squeals were alarms
I guess they were making their territory known to other muskrats?
maybe, but usually when any animal sees something scary they scream out a certain signal they all know. It means “THERE IS DANGER AROUND,HIDE”!
