As I was sitting out on the screen porch shortly before sundown, taking in the sights and sounds of nature, in the distance I could hear the familiar distant cooing of the mourning dove wafting through the air. With so much craziness going on out in the world, somehow the peaceful sound of this bird’s song was calming music to my ears.

Well done Rebecca! We have Mourning Doves in California where I live. Some were raised in an avocado tree in my yard and seem to be habituated to my presence.
The ones here seem very skittish. The minute I walk out the back door, they take off. But if I sit calmly, they will usually land near the feeders and stay until something disturbs them.
we have several types of Doves and yes their cooing is relaxing……..like a cat purring!
Agreed! I really enjoy listening to them.
It is always so peaceful to hear them cooing. We had a nest in my neighbor’s mesh flower basket on her back deck and she watched and photographed them tending to their baby.
Oh, that would be quite a treat! I have never seen their nest or babies.
My neighbor had fun watching the mother and baby and sent me a lot of pictures. There are some pictures in these posts. You don’t have to read the entire posts as I just mentioned the family in maybe one or two paragraphs. I put the most-recent post on top and that is just before it fledge, the post before that was the baby after it hatched (very small) and the first picture was the mom sitting on the eggs. We counted the number of days for the “hatch date”. She was e-mailing me pictures every day:

Love the sounds of birds in the morning. My absolute favorite is the loon. Great pictures, thanks.
Thanks Geri!
