I heard an unfamiliar song coming from the treetops. As I looked up, there sat an adult male Summer Tanager preforming one of his chatter calls. Not normally one that I see in my yard, he was an unexpected and welcome surprise.

Beautiful. These guys are really timid out here and hard to photograph. Excellent photo.
Thanks! Yes, when he noticed that I was there, he took off pretty quickly.
Awesome! I’ve only seen/shot one once myself. Beautiful bird!
Just in the right place at the right time. He didn’t stick around long.
Nice capture!
Thank you!
Nice shot, Rebecca… he’s heading for South America!
I wish him a safe journey. 🙂
Very pretty Rebecca and I Googled to hear the call – very distinctive. You were lucky you looked up and in your own yard – how lucky is that!
I’m just glad he landed on a limb that that wasn’t covered with leaves so that I could see him. I’ve seen several little gems in my backyard lately. It seems to be a busy season for the birds and insects.
You lucked out and I hate when they hide behind leaves or a big stick is in the way.
GREAT photo! My Mom is an avid bird watcher. She puts out bird seed and makes sure there is water for them. We both love birds! Thanks for sharing!
I love to watch them out my kitchen window. The yard would be a lonely place without them.
Yes, so true.
And a lovely song they have! Great job spotting him and getting an image!
Thanks, Ellen! His interesting song gave him away. 🙂
