Eyes on the Berries

A pair of Northern Mockingbirds can be seen almost year-round in our front yard. At this time of year, they are especially attracted to the bright red berries that cover our holly bushes. Mockingbirds find them to be a tasty treat. In addition, they are high in fat and nutrients, which keep them warm and help them make it through the winter.

“Holly berries shining red,
Mean a long winter, ’tis said.

    • Mockingbirds seem to be very territorial. They are always around the front yard and will chase other birds away. I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen a catbird. They are listed as uncommon to fairly common summer resident across our state.

  1. These are beautiful photos Rebecca, especially the Mockingbird with the berry in its beak. I like your holly bush with all its berries – it could be a Christmas card for you to send out next year! My holly bush planted in 1985 is a Blue Boy and only gets about 20 berries altogether and not every year. I did not know “The Almanac” said that about holly berries – wow!

    • Thanks, Linda. I have two holly bushes that are filled with berries every year. Usually by spring, they have been picked clean. I was glad this Mockingbird didn’t seem to mind having his photo taken. I think it’s used to seeing me around.
