Watching the pelicans

Despite the overcast skies, we recently headed to Reelfoot Lake in hopes of seeing the white pelicans.  After looking for them in all the usual places, we finally found them at our last stop of the day.  It quickly became obvious that we weren’t the only ones watching them.  We spotted five eagles sitting high atop the trees — perhaps hoping to pick off a wounded pelican as easy prey.  Unfortunately, the grey day changed to a light drizzle, and then to rain, and our time of watching the pelicans came to an end.

Sun dogs

Female Ruby-throated hummingbird

It’s been quiet in our backyard since the hummingbirds headed south for the winter, with their flurry of activity being sorely missed.  Here are a few photos taken shortly before they headed out.

“Goodbye?  Oh no, please.  Can’t we go back to page one and do it all over again?”  ~Winnie the Pooh

The dance

After viewing a series of photos that I took of this butterfly back in October, I decided to post them in animated motion.  The butterfly looks very graceful as it dances around the flower gathering nectar.

Fishing

“Fishing is not an escape from life, but often a deeper immersion into it.”  ~Henry Middleton

Autumn butterflies

Even though cooler weather has arrived, several butterflies are still lingering around, tempted by a variety of wildflowers that are currently in bloom.

“Beautiful and graceful, varied and enchanting, small but approachable, butterflies lead you to the sunny side of life, and everyone deserves a little sunshine.”  ~Jeffrey Glassberg

Eastern Gray Squirrel

With all the noisy distractions going on in the world right now, sometimes it’s nice just to retreat to a quiet bench in my backyard to watch the goings-on of the gray squirrel family.

“My whole thing is to entertain, make people laugh and to forget about the real world for awhile.”  ~Dan Aykroyd

Morning glories

I like to go walking in the morning when the morning glories are in full bloom.  They are one of the little wildflowers that always seem to make my heart feel glad.

“Love the simple joys of life that put a smile upon your face, a light in your eyes and happiness in your heart.”  ~Unknown
